| Instructions for New Turro Group Graduate Students |
| 1. Letter, papers and keys from Sandy: You will need
a letter from Sandy Turro to get the proper paper work done regarding
your appointment into the department. The letter is to obtain a Columbia
ID. Sandy will also give you a lab notebook and keys to the 7th floor
labs. She will also provide you with a sheet of important numbers
(for faxes, photocopying, buying things from Chemstores, etc.). |
| 2. NSF, NIH or Other External USA Postdoctoral Fellowship
holder: See Beth Israel (Room 351, Engineering Terrace) for information
about fellowship stipend and allocation and appointment. Bring NSF
Pamphlet about NSF fellowship. |
| 3. International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO):
If you are not familiar with the American way of life, go to ISSO
(Suite 200, 524 Riverside Drive) or visit their website (www.columbia.edu/cu/isso/).
They have important information about daily life, bank accounts, taxes,
visa, etc. |
| 4. Library Key and NMR Key: See Felix Rosado or Christopher
Cecilio in Chemstores on the 1st floor of Chandler to get an After
Hours Library Key and a key to the NMR lab (if necessary). |
| 5. Turro Group Server: Ask Zhiqiang to grant you
access to Turro's Server. Here you will find more information about
lab procedures, lab notebooks, giving effective presentations and
writing papers. |
| 6. Desk, Computer and Lab bench: See Zhiqiang or
PH about assignment. |
7. Computer Software: Your computer should be
equipped with the following software -
a) Microsoft Office 98
b) Endnote 5
c) Igor Pro 4.0
d) SciFinder Scholar 2000 (create link to Chem Library)
e) Adobe Acrobat 5.0
f) ChemDraw Ultra
This software (except for SciFinder) can be found in the hall cabinets. |
| 8. Some General Readings: As a member of the Turro
Group, there are some general readings on the History of Photochemistry
and Philosophy of Science that you will want to read. Also, it is
assumed that everyone has read Modern Molecular Photochemistry. See
Sandy if you need a copy. |
