Protecting Computers

If a PC has to be networked, then it should be safe-guarded with the
following software and one needs to perform regular maintenance for updates,

0. Install windows update

1. Nortan Antivirus, free download from AcIS, need periodic update, provides real time protection and deep scan capacity.

2. Zone Alarm, free download from www.zonelabs.com. it is a firewall program that monitors and controls the incoming and outgoing data flow.
Can be used to turn on or off the internet traffic in a program-specific manner, and fend off worms that sneak in through the open ports designed by Gates. ZA needs training in the early stage of operation. One needs to tell which program is allowed to access the network. If not sure if the program is good or bad, use google to verify.

3. Of slightly minor importance, download lavasoft ad-aware, and spybot. both free download (search google). needs periodic update. able to
remove trojans and other bad programs.

4. Any necessary files downloaded should be scanned with norton before installation. to do so, right-click the file and choose scan by norton.
